What is the keto diet? And is it healthy?

If you're like us, feeding you and your family the best foods possible is your top priority. Health is wealth! There are so many different diets out there, claiming to be healthy, like the ketogenic diet. I will help guide you through the complicated keto diet decisions, and prove that plant-based is the way to go!

What is the ketogenic diet?

The ketogenic diet (keto for short) is a high-fat, low carb diet. Basically, you replace carbs with fat. When you get rid of carbohydrates, your body goes into a starvation mode, called ketosis, which is the goal of the keto diet. Carbs are what our body uses as fuel. When there's a carbohydrate shortage, your body will burn fat instead.

Ketosis is an unsafe, and unhealthy state for our body to be in. By going into ketosis, you’re tricking your body that it’s starving. But it’s not. It’s screaming out for carbs, for fuel. But the keto diet doesn’t allow that.

The keto diet is also a great way to shorten your lifespan. Not only because you starve your body of nutrients, you also increase your animal products intake. Animal products have been shown to increase your risk of many dangerous diseases.

Think about this as well, animals that eat high amounts of meat (like a dog) live shorter lives than animals that only eat plants (like a tortoise). Dogs live 10 - 13 years vs a tortoise, which lives up to 150 years.

There is also a way to go into ketosis while not eating any animal products at all. The vegan-keto diet. You've probably heard of this as it is a pretty popular diet as well. Like I said above, ketosis is an unsafe, and unhealthy state for our body to be in. Even when no animal products are involved.

What foods are considered keto?

According to leafyvibes.com

Meats – fish, beef, lamb, poultry, egg
Leafy Greens – spinach, kale
Above ground vegetables – broccoli, cauliflower
High fat dairy – hard cheeses, high fat cream, butter
Nuts and seeds – macadamias, walnuts, sunflower seeds
Avocado and berries – raspberries, blackberries, and other low glycemic impact berries
Sweeteners – stevia, erythritol, monk fruit, and other low-carb sweeteners
Other fats – coconut oil, high-fat salad dressing, saturated fats, etc.

Saturated fats from animal products are extremely unhealthy. And that's exactly what the keto diet is filled with. Saturated fats have been shown to raise blood cholesterol levels. And this is what causes the leading cause of death in America: Heart disease. Many consider the vegan diet "extreme". But just look what you eat on a keto diet. Butter? Now this is where common sense comes in.

There are also many stuff NOT allowed on a keto diet, including...

Grains – wheat, corn, rice, cereal
Sugar – honey, agave, maple syrup
Fruit – apples, bananas, oranges

Bottom line

The Ketogenic diet is dangerous. You are sacrificing your health to lose weight. It's unnatural, unsafe and unnecessary. A Vegan diet is the way to go, especially if you want to lose weight, and live healthy at the same time. Like I said, Health is wealth!
